Day 2 of 10: Utilizing Excel with Business Central - Copy and Paste

Updated: Jul 3

Understanding Business Central and Excel Integration

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an all-in-one business management solution designed for small to medium-sized businesses. It automates and streamlines business processes, offering modules for finance, supply chain management, sales, project management, and more. On the other hand, Microsoft Excel is a cornerstone tool for data analysis, widely used for its versatility and robust functionalities.

The integration between these two platforms allows users to leverage the strengths of both applications. The ability to copy and paste data directly between Business Central and Excel simplifies numerous tasks, from data entry to complex analysis.

Copy from Business Central and Paste into Excel:

The simplest copy/paste functionality is the selection of data in Business Central copying it and then navigating to Excel and pasting the data.

However, you can take that a step further and take data back from Excel and put it into Business Central. The key to doing this successfully is making sure you have the same formatted columns in the excel document as you do in Business Central.

For me, the easiest way to make sure I am formatted correctly is by taking those copied the columns in BC and pasting them into excel.

1.      Select the rows in the journal you would like to copy/paste.

2.      Paste the rows into Excel. Tip: Enter one or two rows so you see which fields have which types of data.

3.      Fill in the information for your rows

4.      Copy the lines that you would like to paste into BC. Do not select the entire line, just select the data that you want to paste into BC. Make sure you go all the way to the end of the columns you copied out of BC.

5.      Go back to your journal in BC and click into the outermost cell in the journal entry grid.

6.      Then paste into the journal by selecting crtl+V.

7.      If you change the layout of your journal entry and the columns no longer match what you started with in excel you won’t be able to paste, so be cognizant of your formatting.

And Ta-da! That’s all you need to do to be able to copy and paste data between Business Central and Excel!
